Approximately 27,000 blocks were used in the construction, which were cast by hand, on-site, with an aluminum mold and made out of gravel, granite, sand (from the site) and water. It took ten days for each block to fully dry and cure before it could be used. Brilliantly proportioned rooms flow effortlessly from one to another.

Today the Martin House has been completely-restored to its former magnificence in the most ambitious restoration of a Frank Lloyd Wright site ever undertaken. Three of the original elements — the pergola, conservatory and carriage house, which were demolished decades ago – are rebuilt in the first-ever reconstruction of Wright buildings. Although the movie isn’t set in the picturesque seaside town, director Emerald Fennell has said that the name—which refers in the movie to a sprawling country estate—was inspired by the North Yorkshire location. On Saltburn-by-the-Sea and growing interest in the area from out-of-towners, investors and creatives, Saltburn is having a bit of a moment. The single-story home and its grounds have since been cleared and in its place will be a massive home in the modern farmhouse style that has come to dominate US suburbs. The so-called Samuel Freeman house is made from 12,000 concrete bricks, which incorporated sand from the hillside sloping down below it. These are assembled in the “textile block” style, which evokes the appearance of quilted stone. Samuel and Harriet Freeman fell in love with Wright’s architecture as guests at the Hollyhock House. Architecture
Built in the early 1960s and recently given a contemporary makeover, the all-white structure is nestled amid a grassy parcel of land spanning almost three-quarters of an acre. Described by Wright as a “domestic symphony,” the Martin House is a comprehensive residential estate. The property includes the main dwelling, a secondary house, a gardener’s cottage, and a series of interconnected buildings woven together within an integrated landscape. Art glass, furnishings, and other creative design elements—all conceived by Wright—give rise to a bold new vision of the home as a total work of art. Built in 1924 and occupying a majestic Los Feliz hilltop with staggering views from downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean, this remarkable property has undergone years of thoughtful restoration at a cost of nearly $17 million.

Originally listed in March for around $2.4 million, Short scored a slight deal on the property.
A pergola connects the home to a conservatory and carriage house with chauffeur’s quarters and stables, while a smaller residence and gardener’s cottage sit nearby. Over the decades, the complex suffered considerable damage and three of the original five buildings were destroyed, but in 1992, the Martin House Restoration Corporation was formed to raise funds and oversee a complete restoration. Extensive reconstruction efforts began in 1997 and are ongoing today, but visitors can now experience the property on a variety of tours.
